Today’s first reading is from the Book of Jonah. We only hear a<\/span> slice of it at Mass, but the whole story is fascinating. If you haven\u2019t<\/span> read it before \u2013 not just a children\u2019s version, but the real Scripture<\/span> story –<\/span> do yourself a favor, and do so.<\/span> This short, non-literal story<\/span> will only take about ten minutes, but its message is as important<\/span> as most literal Biblical accounts.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

We<\/span> don\u2019t<\/span> have<\/span> to<\/span> read<\/span> far<\/span> to<\/span> start<\/span> recognizing<\/span> ourselves<\/span> in<\/span> Jonah.<\/span> God<\/span> calls<\/span> him<\/span> for<\/span> servicio<\/span> in<\/span> Nineveh,<\/span> and<\/span> Jonah<\/span> refuses.<\/span> He<\/span> covers<\/span> his<\/span> ears<\/span> and<\/span> repeats,<\/span> \u201cI<\/span> can\u2019t<\/span> hear<\/span> you!<\/span> I<\/span> can\u2019t<\/span> hear<\/span> you!\u201d<\/span> That<\/span> is<\/span> figurative<\/span> too;<\/span> what<\/span> he<\/span> does,<\/span> is<\/span> buy<\/span> a<\/span> one-way<\/span> ticket<\/span> aboard\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span> ship<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> end<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> earth,<\/span> the<\/span> opposite<\/span> direction<\/span> of<\/span> Nineveh. Jonah<\/span> prefers<\/span> to<\/span> leave<\/span> his<\/span> homeland,<\/span> and<\/span> his<\/span> people,<\/span> and<\/span> spend money<\/span> on<\/span> a<\/span> ticket,<\/span> with<\/span> no<\/span> idea<\/span> what<\/span> life<\/span> will<\/span> be<\/span> like<\/span> exiled<\/span> in<\/span> a <\/span>strange land, to avoid doing God\u2019s will.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

His life converges with an innocent crew of seamen, pagans, but<\/span> men of goodwill, going about their own business. Jonah boards<\/span> their ship, buries himself in the pit of the vessel with the hopes<\/span> that God won\u2019t see him; then, falls asleep intending to clear his<\/span> mind of the whole affair.<\/span> The storm comes; sailors awaken Jonah;<\/span> Jonah admits he has been defying God and offers to be thrown<\/span> overboard. Still, rather than repent and offer to be obedient to<\/span> God, Jonah prefers to be thrown into the tempestuous ocean to<\/span> drown.<\/span> The sailors accept the idea with great sorrow, but afterward, when the ocean calms, they praise the God of Jonah and<\/span> become unintended coverts.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Our<\/span> infinitely<\/span> patient<\/span> and<\/span> determined<\/span> God<\/span> directs<\/span> Jonah<\/span> into<\/span> three<\/span> days<\/span> of<\/span> silent<\/span> reflection,<\/span> with<\/span> only<\/span> God<\/span> as<\/span> his<\/span> companion.<\/span> Jonah<\/span> had<\/span> to<\/span> travel<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> bowels<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> earth<\/span> and<\/span> his<\/span> own<\/span> spiritual<\/span> pit<\/span> to<\/span> experience<\/span> conversion.<\/span> Once<\/span> complete,<\/span> Jonah<\/span> is<\/span> delivered<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> shore<\/span> of<\/span> Nineveh<\/span> and<\/span> this<\/span> Sunday\u2019s<\/span> reading<\/span> begins.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Jonah could be considered history\u2019s most successful prophet<\/span> by converting and saving the lives of a great city of 120,000<\/span> people, but when his mission was complete after only one day,<\/span> Jonah was resentful that God chose to accept their repentance.<\/span> He didn\u2019t want the city to be spared. We go to great extents at<\/span> times to avoid listening to God and doing his will. We may think<\/span> we have it hard, and others are getting away scot-free. Jonah<\/span> reveals that by following God\u2019s will we save our own lives and<\/span> many other intended and unintended souls too.<\/span><\/p>
