Yes, Divorce is Bad.

Some things we get used to, but we shouldn’t. Things like gambling, drinking excessively, and drug use… things society accepts as normal. Divorce is like that. Though hardly anyone ever gets married thinking he or she may “opt-out” later, when society makes it so socially acceptable, it weakens everyone’s commitment. Recently, the NY Times and the Washington Post wrote glowing pieces on how women are happier and better off once divorced. Not so fast.

Divorce is the #1 factor in poverty for women and children. It divides families and disrupts the connections we need to thrive. Kids of divorce statistically do worse in school and are more likely to be in trouble.

Jesus taught it was against God’s plan (Matthew 19). That’s why Catechism teaches that divorce “introduces disorder into the family and society. This disorder brings grave harm to the deserted spouse, to children traumatized by the separation of their parents and often torn between them, and because of its contagious effect which makes it truly a plague on society.”

There are times when it can’t be avoided, but it should be the last resort. We should do all in our power to heal hurting marriages and support families. We Catholics have to lead by example so society can return to a healthy place where marriage and family can thrive again.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a separation or divorce, our Viaje a la esperanza ministry can help.
