acts of the apostles

scripture study

Acts of the Apostles is the story of how a few Christians, empowered by the Holy Spirit, were chosen to spread Christ to the whole world. Acts spans a period of almost 30 years following the Resurrection of Jesus, when the early Christians ”turned the world upside down” while spreading the Good News. Written by St. Luke, Acts provides a glimpse of the amazing power and guidance of the Holy Spirit!

33 days to eucharistic glory

a spiritual pilgrimage

At critical times throughout Salvation History, God’s people have been invited to consecrate themselves. We are at one of those critical times. 33 Days to Eucharistic Glory is the first ever Eucharistic Consecration. The program includes a book with daily reflections, virtues to adopt, extraordinary prayers, and inspiring stories to help us experience Jesus in the Eucharist like never before.

Men's Ministry

Men’s Ministry at St. Lawrence is a weekly meeting of Catholic and Christian men in the parish and neighborhood on Saturday mornings from 7 am to 8:30 am in the Large Conference Room (2nd floor) of the Parish Center. It is a great way to start your Saturday off on the right foot and still have the rest of the day for your family.

Our motto or mission statement at Men’s Ministry is, “As iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). It offers an opportunity for brotherly camaraderie and to help sharpen each other to become what God has called us to be: the spiritual leaders of our families and our domestic church.

We start with bagels and coffee and an opening prayer. Then, we have a short presentation (20-30 minutes) that may include a video or two of an interesting Catholic-themed topic. This is followed by some great table discussion, and we end with prayer intentions and a closing prayer. It’s a wonderful way to recharge your Catholic faith and help you deal with the day-to-day distractions and pressures of an increasingly secular and godless society.

“If you are not drawing your life from Jesus, it means you are trying to draw it from some other source.  I’ll guarantee you that it’s not working.”  From Beautiful Outlaw by John Eldredge.

Give us a try. And similar to Vegas, “What is said in Men’s Ministry, stays in Men’s Ministry!”

Discipleship

At St. Lawrence O’Toole and Sacred Heart Churches, we work to stay focused on this vision. We understand that if we keep our eyes on Jesus, strive to grow closer to Him personally, and allow Him to lead our lives, we will be truly happy. We will also gain the confidence to influence the people around us, be witnesses to Jesus’ Truth and love, and help others encounter the beauty and freedom that comes from following Christ.

Jesus formed the Church because He wants us to worship, learn, and serve in the community. We cannot grow in holiness alone; we need each other. God reveals Himself to each of us in individual ways and we come to know God more fully by seeing how He relates to others too.  Our Discipleship Small Groups were formed to help our parishioners grow to be full missionary disciples.

Faith Formation Reflections

Our Divine Event Planner

Our eighteen pilgrims had big expectations heading out to Indianapolis: big crowd, enormous stadium and convention center, and big-name speakers. We soon discovered, however, that the enormity of it was not the size and quantity of the event, but the magnitude of grace that the Holy Spirit poured out on

Proud to be Catholic

As I write this article, I am preparing to leave for the National Eucharistic Congress. Over the last 60 days, over 100,000 men, women, and children joined the four Eucharistic Pilgrimage routes from our northern, southern, eastern, and western borders to the middle of our nation in Indianapolis. The routes

Hopeful Entertainment

Back in college, I took a sociology of fashion class. I remember the professor telling us that fashion adapts to the emotional needs of the time. In difficult years, designers tried to lift people’s spirits with cheerful colors and enticing styling. She explained that the entertainment industry worked the same

Who Sails Your Boat?

Recently, I heard a compelling teaching from Bishop Robert Barron about Jesus calming the storm. He starts by explaining that in the scriptures, a boat always represents the Church – meaning the people that make up the Church, not the institution. Stormy waters are the difficulties the Church, meaning us,
