In Genesis we read, “God formed man out of the dust of the ground, and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”

The Lord said to Isaiah, “Thus says God, the Lord who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and its produce, who gives breath to its people and spirit to those who walk on it…”

In Psalm 104, the author prays to God, “When you hide your face, they panic. Take away their breath, they perish and return to the dust. Send forth your spirit, they are created and you renew the face of the earth.”

In Job we are told that if God were “to set his mind to it, gather to himself his spirit and breath, all flesh would perish together, and mortals return to dust.”

In the recent Elevated Mission, the praise and worship lyrics of the song, Great are You Lord resonated with me:

It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
To You only

We could not exist without God’s breath in us, and He fills our lungs with his Spirit whether we believe in Him or not. Atheist or faithful, our Spirit-filled inhales and exhales are the reason we live. Let this Pentecost ignite an awareness of the Spirit within us so that every breath becomes a prayer of gratitude and praise for his grace, love, and faithfulness.

Scripture: Read Ezekiel 37:5-6. What stands out?

Call to Action: Take some time every day to breathe deeply and consciously aware of God’s Spirit moving in you.
